Happy-ness Is Spring

By

Happiness is Clinique?

When Clinique Happy was first launched in the 90s, it was a hit. Every woman I knew back then had donned this perfume one way or the other.

Happy is a sparkling scent to begin with – lots of citrus and white florals tainted with hints of musk. The fragrance is light and airy with a characteristic aroma that brings nothing but sheer freshness. Wearing this fragrance never fails to put a smile on my face. It conjures memories of spring in the countryside where lush greens fill the horizon and the garden is always teeming with flowers in full bloom.

This fragrance is devoid of pretentiousness other perfumes seem to have these days. Happy is, suffice to say, uncomplicated. It doesn’t have any confusing notes to put your olfactory senses in a head spin. Rather, it is a straightforward citrusy-floral perfume and nothing more.

Years went by and just like other fragrances; Clinique Happy came up with flankers. Each iteration represents an intense or watered down version of the original. And in some cases, one or two accords were added to spice up the otherwise, worn-out concoction. There were Happy Heart (2003), Happy To Be (2005) and Happy In Bloom (2008).

Some people who have grown accustomed to Happy’s aroma stayed with the fragrance. As for the others, some felt that they have outgrown the scent and that it’s something that is considered passé in their fragrance vocabulary. Well, to each his own. Besides, people’s preference for scents really changes over the years.

As they say, spring is the season of constant anticipation. Spring to me, is Happy.
